Abstract
Lee Maracle burst onto the Canadian literary scene with her autobiographical novel Bobbi Lee, Indian Rebel (1975), and she continues to be an important political and literary voice. Her work transcends geographical and historical boundaries to express the plight of Indigenous women and children, the histories of colonialism and struggles for decolonization by Indigenous communities, and the spiritual and aesthetic sensibilities of her Salish ancestry. Maracle's writing is often polemical, using character development and plot to engage directly with her reader's assumptions about Indigenous peoples’ experiences of racism and colonialism, yet her work is also enlivened by the core tenets of orality and transformation that inhere in Indigenous storytelling traditions. Through the integration of political, aesthetic, and spiritual elements, her writing expresses the force and value of literary sovereignty by demonstrating how an Indigenous worldview integrates self, family, community, and culture to decolonizing ends. Her writing is importantly situated alongside that of a generation of Canadian authors, including Jeannette Armstrong, Beth Brant, Maria Campbell, and Beatrice Culleton Mosionier, who have refashioned Indigenous writing in order to formalize and define their activist aesthetics and politics.
