High-rate data communication over cable requires a line driver capable of providing the power gain necessary to transmit the modulated signal over the low characteristic impedance of the cable. For a fully-integrated transceiver, the line driver must be designed using CMOS technology. For best performance, a line driver must have a differential topology, no loss in the termination, a tunable output impedance and a voltage gain independent of process and load impedance variation. This topology is capable of driving 2 V/sub pp/ across 75 /spl Omega/ from a 3.3 V supply with <-47.5 dB total harmonic distortion and 160 MHz bandwidth. The target application is the full-duplex transmission of up to 622 Mb/s over 300 m of coax cable using a multilevel modulation scheme and hence a bandwidth requirement of 160 MHz.
