Abstract
The mesentery of the small intestine attains a broad-based attachment to the posterior abdominal wall and extends from the duodenojejunal junction to the ileocecal region. The end result of this process is the normal location of the small and large intestines. A brief review of the main features of the common congenital anomalies is presented and illustrated with pictures of surgical specimens. The common congenital anomalies include Meckel diverticulum, duplications, intestinal atresia, stenosis, gastroschisis, omphalocele, and volvulus. Duplications may occur anywhere along the gastrointestinal tract, although those of small bowel origin are found in the ileum. Gastroschisis occurs when there is a small defect in the abdominal wall to the right of the umbilicus through which there is massive evisceration of the intestines. Prenatal ultrasonography is a sensitive method of prenatal diagnosis. Treatment is surgical by means of primary closure, or use of a surgical silo or polymeric silicone sac.
