Abstract
Dans ce dernier opus, Anne Carol poursuit ses questionnements sur le mouvement d'investissement de la mort par la médecine (cf.Les médecins et la mort XIX e -XX e siècle, Aubier, 2004).Par le biais de l'histoire sociale des sciences, elle aborde la guillotine et en fait, au sens plein du terme, un objet d'histoire.La machine conçue par Guillotin et Louis comme une invention supposée rendre la mort du condamné prompte et douce n'est pas confrontée à l'histoire politique de la Révolution, ce sont ici les liens entre la guillotine et la médecine qui constituent le cœur de l'enquête.La Veuve est examinée dans une chronologie ample qui s'ouvre en 1789 avec la présentation de l'invention par Guillotin et se clôt en 1914, au moment où le rapport à la souffrance se trouve bouleversé par la Grande Guerre.Anne Carol ne place pas la Révolution au cœur de son propos, mais son livre invite les historiens de la période à décentrer leur regard sur la guillotine et enrichit considérablement la compréhension du moment révolutionnaire.
