Abstract
Le multiculturalisme est un courant philosophique qui a d'abord été pensé dans deux pays d'Amérique du Nord (Canada, États-Unis) suite au constat de la faible pertinence de la théorie de l'assimilation qui avait pourtant fait ses preuves au cours de la première mondialisation (1870-1914) ainsi que durant la période de l'entre-deux-guerres. Quels sont les fondements théoriques du multiculturalisme ? Doit-on pour autant parler d'un modèle multiculturel ? Ne convient-il pas plutôt d'évoquer la diversité de son ancrage ou de ses manifestations (art culinaire, fête, représentation politique, université) ? L'intensification des flux de communication et d'échanges qui caractérisent la mondialisation contemporaine n'est-elle pas propice au rayonnement de ce courant en dépit des critiques qui sont formulées à son égard ? Un questionnement auquel se propose de répondre ce numéro de Géographie et cultures tout en soulignant la contribution potentielle de la géographie culturelle à cette phase historique inédite.
