Abstract
The Victorian novel, reflecting enormous economic changes, is preoccupied with money, and money almost always causes it both formal and moral complications. To understand these complications, it is useful to take as a guide Max Weber's theory as laid out in The Protestant Ethic and the “Spirit” of Capitalism , which paradoxically argues that religious otherworldliness was a powerful force in the development of capitalism. Realist fiction struggled to reconcile moral and religious purity with the working of the marketplace, and Victorian novelists tended to run into contradictions that their works cannot entirely resolve. Two of the most popular works of the period, Charlotte Yonge's The Heir of Redclyffe and Dinah Mullock Craik's John Halifax, Gentleman , provide clear examples of such unresolved contradictions and formal failures and might be taken to represent the limits of Victorian fiction's difficulties of coming to terms with money in the new capitalist economy.
