Abstract
The Protestant Reformation was a late‐medieval pan‐European political disruption in the scope and influence of the Catholic Church and the papacy. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries most northern European countries, including most of Britain, rejected papal authority and nationalized their churches, adopting new worship practices, governance models, and doctrines. The Reformation was a political as well as religious and intellectual transformation of western Europe. Its development in Britain was uneven in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, with both England and Scotland gradually moving into the Reformed sphere of influence.
