Editorial introductions

Current Opinion in Otolaryngology & Head and Neck Surgery was launched in 1993. It is one of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The fields of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery are divided into 11 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Journal's Section Editors for this issue. Section Editors Danny J. EnepekidesFigure 1Dr Enepekides has dedicated his career to the treatment of complex malignancies of the head, neck and skull base. He completed his undergraduate degree, medical degree, and residency at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Following his residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery he went on to complete two fellowships, one at Hahnemann University Medical Center Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; and another at the University of California - Davis in Sacramento California. He subsequently joined Dr Paul Donald at the UC Davis Medical Center where he was an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Chief of Otolaryngology at the Northern California VA Medical Center. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Toronto. He is an active member of the American Head and Neck Society, American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, American Medical Association, Canadian Society of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Dr Enepekides specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of complex malignancies of the aerodigestive tract, skull base and thyroid. He is a fully trained microvascular surgeon and is extremely active in the reconstruction and functional rehabilitation of patients following major ablative cancer surgery. He is also skilled in the management of maxillofacial trauma and is an AO faculty member. Dr Enepekides has authored, co-authored or edited over 25 publications and has given over 30 national and international presentations. His research interests are focused on the chemoprevention of head and neck cancer and the radiobiology of squamous cell carcinoma. Nick JonesFigure 2Nick Jones is special Professor in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the University of Nottingham, UK. His special interests are rhinology and facial plastic surgery. He qualified in Dentistry and Medicine at Guy's Hospital, London and obtained a General Surgical Fellowship in 1986 and an ENT Fellowship in 1987. He completed his training at Great Ormond Street and The Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital as well as doing a fellowship at the University of Washington, USA. He became a consultant in Nottingham, UK, in 1991. He was awarded an MD at the University of London in 1997. He has been a special Professor since 1999. He is interested in the management of facial pain and medical diseases that affect the nose and paranasal sinuses. He specialises in rhinology with particular expertise in nasal reconstructive surgery, rhinoplasty and the extended uses of endoscopic sinus surgery. His research interests include facial pain, the immunology, proteomics and molecular biology of rhinitis. He has published 280 peer-reviewed papers, six books and 35 chapters and none reports. He teaches on many courses internationally and is assistant editor for eight journals. Sherard A. TatumFigure 3Dr Tatum has dedicated his career to the reconstruction of children and adults with deformities of the face, head and neck. He did his undergraduate work at Rollins College in Winters Park, Florida, USA. He earned his medical degree at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa Florida. He continued on to his residency in General Surgery and Otolaryngology at the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. After his residency training, he went on to complete two fellowship years, one in craniomaxillofacial surgery at the University of Eppendorf in Hamburg, Germany; and one in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of California Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. He is Board Certified in both Otolaryngology and Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has been at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University since 1992 and is currently an Associate Professor in Otolaryngology and Pediatrics. He is the Medical Director of the Central New York Cleft and Craniofacial Center. He is Assistant Director of the Otolaryngology Residency and Co-Director of the Craniomaxillofacial Surgery fellowship. He has given over 100 presentations and has authored, co-authored or edited over 60 publications. He is active in the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and the American Cleft Palate – Craniofacial Association. He specializes in cleft lip and cleft palate repair, orthognathic surgery, correction of craniosynostosis, and craniofacial syndromes such as Crouzon syndrome, Treacher Collins syndrome, velo-cardio-facial syndrome, Pierre Robin Sequence and many others. He also performs trauma repair and microsurgical reconstruction. Dr Tatum has taken his expertise overseas to help children in Ekaterinaburg, Russia; Linyi, China; Ecuador; El Salvador, and most recently Ho Chi Min City and Hanoi, Vietnam. He has also traveled to Zagrab, Croatia to do reconstructive work on those injured by the war and others. He has received service awards from the Onondaga County Medical Society and the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery for this work.
