Abstract

This chapter provides an overview on and summarizes the major developments of the new science of genetic engineering, and considers its impacts with sustainability in mind. Biology and its many sub fields of research have seen a boon with the emergence of molecular biology. Much of the gigantic progress of biochemistry and physiology can be ascribed to this new field, and in particular to genetic engineering. As an important aside, canola was developed over many years of intense breeding by a team of scientists working for the Department of Agriculture in Canada— hence funded by Canadian tax dollars. The research on glyphosate's effects on the microbiome are particularly disconcerting. The microbiome is a superorgan that all animals have, usually connected to the digestive tube. Glyphosate is a synthetic amino acid analog. Amino acid analogs can easily be mistaken for the real thing by the protein metabolism of the cells.
