Abstract
Subject Ukraine-Russia gas dispute. Significance Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk reiterated on July 7 that a new gas arrangement involving Ukraine, Russia and the EU would guarantee further transits of Russian gas to Europe. The premier's statement follows the collapse of the three-party talks held in Vienna on June 30 regarding supplies of Russian gas to Ukraine in the third quarter and beyond, which led to a suspension of gas supplies. The latest dispute underlines the inescapably conflicting nature of gas relations between Ukraine and Russia, while also confirming the importance of the EU's mediation role. Impacts The absence of Russian gas supplies to Ukraine poses no immediate summer threat to EU-bound transit. Should Ukraine fail to build up sufficient gas reserves, the risks may increase closer to the winter heating season. Ukraine-Russia gas relations will remain tense until at least 2019 when the current agreement expires.
