Abstract
Abstract Information on Byzantine gardens is scant: archaeological excavations have revealed little other than water‐courses; despite numerous and usually stylized and traditional details, there is no artistic representation devoted solely to a garden; the few literary descriptions are heavily dependent upon classical forebears, either vying with them or copying whatever detail is relevant and, on two occasions, even in the exact words of the original.
