Abstract
Abstract Stressors promote behavioral, cognitive, emotional, and biological changes, many of which are essential to contend with the ongoing challenge. The biological changes introduced by stressors are a cascade of neuronal, hormonal, and immunological alterations that are thought to serve in an adaptive capacity. They may prepare the organism to cope with the challenge, blunt the psychological impact of the stressor, limit excessive activation of biological systems that might otherwise produce adverse outcomes, and diminish the influence of foreign pathogens (McEwen, 2000; Sapolsky, Romero, & Munck, 2005).
