Abstract
For long, international trade politics was a relatively clear and uncluttered affair. A selective number of developed states — primarily the United States, later joined by the European Union — designed the international trading system and were chiefly responsible for setting up, and maintaining, bilateral and multilateral platforms characterized by rules aimed at restricting discrimination and at the gradual opening of markets. Also, the traditional patterns of business lobbying were rather straightforward. Policy-makers faced political pressure from domestic producers seeking protection from external competition (import-competitors) and those interested in access to third markets (exporters). These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
