Abstract
L’un des rôles de la musicologie, aussi fondamental que mal connu, consiste en la réalisation d’éditions critiques de partitions. Cette activité trouve son origine dans les « éditions monumentales » du XIXe siècle, qui rassemblaient les œuvres de compositeurs dans des collections de référence. Au sens moderne, l’édition critique d’une œuvre résulte d’une analyse de ses sources, menée selon une méthodologie scientifique. Elle a pour but d’établir une version aussi fiable et stabilisée que possible de son texte. Cet article en expose les fondements et les principes, puis se focalise sur quelques éditions critiques de musique française.
