Abstract
The influential work of US cultural sociologist and institutional economist Thorstein Veblen (1857–1929) is discussed with a focus on his classic book of 1899, The Theory of the Leisure Class . Veblen's thesis concerning an emerging class that pursues “invidious distinctions” through “conspicuous consumption” – the display of wealth and status symbols – is shown to anticipate later sociologies of mass culture, consumerism, fashion, and affluence. Veblen's many examples from everyday life – such as table manners, dress, sports, and higher education – illustrate the economic and cultural value of this rising unproductive class in modern societies.
