Abstract
Harold Innis (1894–1952) was a Canadian political economist and media theorist who offered an historically informed understanding of the materiality of media of communication. For Innis, communication is not just about the meaningful content of a message but also the physical form the message takes and the means by which it is sent. The unique qualities of a medium of communication influence the content and extension of that knowledge in time and space and therefore the medium helps to shape the society in which that medium plays a significant role. For Innis, a medium cannot be reduced to the technological device but must be understood as a complex form of social organization that works on the axes of both time and space.
