Abstract
Significance Italy’s national accounts confirmed that the economy grew by 0.4% quarter-on-quarter for a third quarter in April-June, driven by services and a 0.6% increase in industrial activity, which had dragged growth lower in the first quarter. Household spending, fixed investment and stockbuilding made strong contributions to growth but net exports contributed nothing, with exports and imports rising at a similar pace and offsetting each other. Impacts Private spending and business investment will be the main drivers of growth in 2017-18. Real disposable income is likely to slow due to accelerating inflation, but the improving labour market should nonetheless support spending. Fiscal policy may tighten next year, but potential growth will remain below 1% without more widespread structural reform. The banking sector will strengthen, helped by rising rates and no more near-term rescues but the public debt burden remains a constraint.
