En économie, il existe peu de domaines autres que l'étude de la productivité pouvant attirer autant d'intérêt scientifique tout en ayant une si grande portée sociale.Pour toute entité économique d'envergure, comme un pays entier, l'augmentation de la productivité constitue la seule façon relativement stable de hausser le niveau de vie.Aussi est-il capital a) de connaître l'évolution de la productivité dans le passé, en des lieux et circonstances diverses, b) de tenter de déduire de cette information une compréhension des sources de la croissance de la productivité et de leurs interactions, afin de c) formuler des prédictions éclairées concernant la croissance ultérieure de la productivité et d) la façon avec laquelle les politiques pourraient l'influencer.Ce sont précisément les thèmes des articles de ce numéro.Certains les abordent au niveau macroéconomique, et c'est à ce palier que j'ai choisi de poser les grandes questions.D'autres scrutent la microéconomie, industrie par industrie ou société par société.C'est précisément à cette échelle où, traditionnellement, on s'attend à trouver les explications essentielles.Comme préface à cette étude d'envergure, je voudrais attirer l'attention sur certains points saillants, tant analytiques qu'empiriques, concernant l'évolution de la productivité -et qui semblent mériter qu'on s'y attarde.On trouvera dans les articles qui suivent beaucoup de données pertinentes, de même que certaines pistes pouvant éventuellement mener à des réponses.Mais le sujet ne s'en trouvera pas épuisé pour autant.
