Abstract
Heterosexuality is a sexual orientation where there is emotional, romantic, and/or sexual attraction and desire between two people of the “opposite” sex and gender. It is a socially constructed concept, originating in Euro‐Western society and sciences, based on the idea of difference – hetero meaning different – and binary sex, gender, and sexuality. Heterosexuality is situated as the “normal” sexuality, while homosexuality is situated as deviant, but also as binary to heterosexuality. A monolith category of sexuality, heterosexuality has spread globally, obscuring the various ways people are sexual and disallowing sexualities outside of the norm. Heterosexuality has become naturalized, thought as inherent and enduring; all people are typically considered heterosexual until stated otherwise. Queer and feminist theorists disrupt these normative ideas of sexual orientation and the institutionalization of heterosexuality.
