Abstract
Little is known about the personality factors that may contribute to exceptional longevity in Canada. Through life-story narratives, this exploratory qualitative study explored the Big-Five personality model as well as resiliency processes of 15 Canadian centenarians. Centenarians displayed all five personality traits; they were extraverted, emotionally stable, and had agreeable personalities. They also exhibited conscientiousness by being self-disciplined in their routines and some openness to learning and remaining connected to the world around them. Participating centenarians also revealed robust resiliency processes through optimism, humour, work, and faith. Findings from this study highlight centenarians’ agency in their day-to-day interactions and social relationships. Findings may also help improve intergenerational communication with centenarians and decrease ageist views.
