Abstract
William de Montibus (d. 1213) was a cancellarius and master at Lincoln who was a capable churchman, learned theologian, prolific writer, and a well‐known teacher. He was famous for producing a rich corpus of pastoral and penitential literature that was widely disseminated throughout medieval Europe as well as repeatedly excerpted in later preaching manuals. William's most popular work was the poem Peniteas cito peccator which was used as a handbook for confessors.
