Abstract
Que se passe-t-il lorsque deux ou plusieurs personnes sont face à face ? Comment se déroule l’interaction lorsque l’une d’entre elles commet un impair, ou présente un handicap physique ? Ou si elle est considérée comme un malade mental ? C’est ce type de questions que le sociologue canadien Erving Goffman (1922-1982) a explorées tout au long de sa vie de chercheur. Il en résulte une œuvre foisonnante, passionnante, mais aussi très controversée : certains voient en Goffman le plus grand sociologue de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle, alors que d’autres estiment que ses analyses ne sont que le reflet d’un point de vue petit-bourgeois sur la société urbaine américaine. Ce livre s’attache à présenter de façon synthétique différentes facettes de l’œuvre et à discuter les multiples critiques qu’elle a suscitées.
