Abstract
21 April (Reuters Health)—Clinicians should consider malaria in febrile neonates and young infants of mothers who have immigrated from or traveled to areas where malaria is endemic, according to authors of a case report in the Morbidity and MortalityWeekly Report for 22 April. Dr. B. Doraiswamy, at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, New York, and colleagues describe a 7-weekold infant hospitalized in April 2004 with a 1-day history of low-grade fever. After ruling out sepsis and treating him with antibiotics, he was discharged. Five days later, hemoglobin had fallen from 9.2 g/dL at hospital discharge to 6.2 g/dL, and his hematocrit was 18%. Peripheral blood smears showed Plasmodium vivax parasites, and he was treated with chloroquine and a blood transfusion. Subsequent blood smears were negative. Upon questioning in Spanish, the mother reported having moved to the US from Guatemala in June 2003, and had been diagnosed with malaria 2 years earlier.
