Abstract
Karl Hegel , fils du célèbre philosophe Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, est l'un des historiens allemands les plus importants de son temps, vécu presque tout le XIX e siècle et ses développements politiques, sociaux et économiques bouleversants, dont il était non seulement un fin observateur mais également un contemporain engagé.Professeur à Rostock, puis à Erlangen, et membre de diverses sociétés d'histoire, il s'appliqua à sortir de l'ombre de son père et se fit un nom en tant que spécialiste de l'histoire urbaine, notamment par l'édition des 27 premiers tomes des Chroniken der deutschen Städte ainsi que d'autres publications sur ce sujet.Il occupa à plusieurs reprises des hautes fonctions dans l'université et se battit, dans le cadre de son enseignement à Erlangen, pour la réforme des études d'histoire et la création d'un séminaire historique.Son engagement ne se limita toutefois pas au domaine académique mais toucha aussi, quoique de manière plus sporadique, le domaine politique à proprement parler, où il défendit la monarchie constitutionnelle et la solution petite-allemande.
