Abstract
The Historia Brittonum is a brief ninth‐century Cambro‐Latin history and description of Britain. It was traditionally attributed to the Welsh monk Nennius or Ninnius, though this attribution is based on a prologue that was probably written in the eleventh century, and is generally not accepted by most scholars today. There are several versions of the Historia Brittonum , and it is often described as a compilation, in recognition of its complex creation and transmission history. Key features of the text include the Trojan foundation story; the story of Vortigern's tower, the two dragons, and the prophetic child (the Merlin of later Arthurian tradition); the life of St. Patrick; a list of battles fought by King Arthur; and brief accounts of some of the wonders of Britain. There are well over 30 medieval manuscripts of the Historia , in different versions. There are also at least nine postmedieval manuscripts, some of them transcriptions by early modern antiquarians, who were particularly interested in the Historia as a source for early British history.
