Abstract
Abstract Classical test statistics, such as the usual F test, for the analysis of repeated measures or longitudinal treatment effects, will provide accurate assessments (i.e., correct Type I error probabilities) of null hypotheses when their assumptions of independence, normality, and homogeneity hold. Homogeneity in this context is referred to as sphericity or circularity. This paper enumerates the validity assumptions for simple‐order and higher‐order repeated measures designs, as well as discussing why for many behavioral science applications sphericity will not be satisfied, and concludes by noting procedures that researchers can adopt to circumvent the biasing effects of nonsphericity.
