Abstract
Abstract Differentiable manifolds are spaces on which differentiable functions can be defined. They are, therefore, a generalization of the ordinary ‐dimensional space ; hence their usefulness and ubiquity in Physics, particularly in field theories. A rigorous definition of (finite‐dimensional) differentiable manifolds is followed by a treatment of vector and tensor fields, differential forms, and the Lie derivative. This chapter serves as an introduction to the companion article on Topics in Differential Geometry.
