Abstract
Significance Trudeau's visit comes as non-economic factors in the Canada-China relationship prove to be significant barriers to the expansion of trade and investment between the two nations. Chinese restrictions on the importation of Canadian canola (rapeseed), Beijing's refusal to recognise the citizenship of Canadians of Hong Kong origin for consular purposes and Ottawa's stance on the South China Sea dispute all present near-term difficulties to Trudeau's longer-term goal of improving commercial ties. Impacts Environmental advocates, indigenous groups and sub-national officeholders may stall the Canadian pipeline developments Beijing seeks. Chinese non-tariff barriers to agricultural imports will also pose difficulties for exporters in Australia and New Zealand. The Canadian export education sector will benefit from Chinese demand facilitated by visa and travel liberalisation.
