precedes GDM diagnosis.Metabolomic data from the UK describe the metabolite disturbances in obese women 10 weeks prior to GDM diagnosis, offering the potential of identifying and targeting clinical and/or research interventions more effectively (8).During pregnancy, DNA fragments from the placenta are released into the maternal plasma in sufficient quantities for genetic analysis from about 10 weeks gestation.Hughes and colleagues demonstrate how testing of fetal DNA will lead to new biological insights into variation in fetal growth and large for gestational age (LGA) (9).Fetal genetics influenced neonatal birthweight independently of fasting glucose concentration and across all levels of maternal glycaemia.These data provide some reassurance for women and clinicians that maternal glucose is not the only contributor to offspring LGA.
