Abstract
am writing this editorial after a day of shoveling out from Mother Nature's latest winter dump.Even though I did some stretching and warm-up exercises in preparation, I am still experiencing some discomfort from delayed onset muscle soreness and sundry other musculoskeletal (MSK) pain in my shoulders and back.The repetitive motion and acute loading of moving that snow can result in disabling MSK pain for some unfortunates (luckily not me).However, even in a relatively sedentary occupation, MSK pain due to extended repetitive motions can be at best inconvenient and at worst career-ending.The results of the survey of Canadian optometrists by a team from Western University in London, Ontario of Canadian optometrists about work-induced MSK pain shows how prevalent this phenomenon is in the practicing profession.Many of us know colleagues who have restricted or ended their practices due to MSK pain.Perhaps in addition to all the education about how to improve patient care, we should also consider education about how to take care of ourselves better.
