Abstract
Women in almost every Muslim society have placed issues of women's rights firmly at the heart of politics in their societies. Through their resistance against Islamist gender politics, women‐centered secular, religious, and/or non‐religious perspectives and activities have introduced a new dynamism into debates over religion and secularism and separation of state and faith. This has also inspired some feminist scholars in the field to identify these activists as Islamic feminists. This entry provides a background to the popularity of the term and the arguments of two sides of the debate over the potential of Islamic feminism as a culturally appropriate frame for feminist activism in Muslim‐majority countries.
