Abstract
During the Anglo‐Saxon period, Winchester was an important administrative, economic, religious, and cultural center in Wessex. After the conquest of 1066 it continued to hold an important place in the structure of England, but endured a gradual decline in importance during the later Middle Ages due to the increasing centralization of the court in London. St. Swithun's priory in Winchester was an important site of manuscript production from the tenth to fifteenth centuries, and the city became associated with the legendary site of Camelot by the fifteenth century.
