Abstract While risk assessment and management procedures are now widely employed, the need for routine and specific environmental monitoring is demonstrated as important inputs to the procedures. Approaches for defining the conceptual framework for risk assessment are provided, including the need to assemble data to assist in quantifying the chemicals in each of the environmental media (e.g., air, soil, and water) and the transformation between media. The elements of food‐chain modeling are described, to demonstrate how the migration pathways may develop between media and elements of the food chain. Specific examples of migration and transformations of chemicals in the environment are explored, with reference to statistical procedures to assist in the data characterization.
