Abstract
Abstract Fatigue of polymers and metals and of their fiber‐reinforced composites are described. Glass‐reinforced polymer laminates suffer from static fatigue, but reinforcing polymers with nanoparticles yield some benefits. Carbon‐reinforced polymers suffer negligible fatigue, static, or dynamic. Reinforced metals are not as fatigue resistant as reinforced polymers. Polymers creep under stress at room temperature, but metals do not creep till half the melting temperature (°K) is reached. Polymers also suffer stress relaxation. These potential weaknesses are described and discussed with particular attention given to fiber laminates and composites.
