Abstract
The American‐Canadian author and activist Jane Jacobs was a strong critic of modernist urban planning and renewal. Her analyses of downtown life revealed the importance of urban complexity and density. While not holding an academic degree, Jacobs influenced how urban life is studied and conceptualized across various disciplines, such as geography and anthropology. Her seminal work The Death and Life of Great American Cities showed how modernist planning ignored the diverse ways in which people inhabit and fashion urban spaces. Besides her offering of intellectual criticism, Jacobs played a vital role in North American urban activism by defending and building on the social and economic intricacies of downtown neighborhoods.
