Abstract
Significance Manufacturing activity has increased only marginally in Canada over the past year, but overall results mask significant sectoral and regional differences. Exports will continue to lead manufacturing growth this year, but prospects are being dampened by slow growth and overcapacity in global industrial markets, as well as by lower-than-expected rates of capital investment in plants and equipment. Impacts The sharp downturn in commodity prices and business investment in Canada's resource sector will drag down manufacturing growth into 2020. A weak capital investment outlook and economic uncertainty will dissuade the Bank of Canada from raising interest rates in 2017. Market access and supply chain competitiveness will form key issues at the June 29 North American Leaders' Summit.
