Abstract
Understanding what is meant by the firm is crucial to economic geography. A diverse spectrum of conceptualizations of the firm linking to behavior, entrepreneurship, learning, resources, evolution, competency, and governance have already been introduced into economic geography, but their tensions and discrepancies have yet to be adequately dealt with. Place, space, and scale need to be more systematically incorporated into the conceptualization of the firm, taking into account both the competence and governance dimensions, and integrating the micro behavior of firms with macro institutions and structures as a multiscalar construct.
