Abstract
Abstract A poet, essayist, novelist, playwright, and short story writer, Tobago‐born Canadian Marlene NourbeSe Philip writes about the history of colonialism and its legacy in relation to peoples of African descent living in the African diaspora. Importantly, Philip's work addresses issues of race, gender, language, memory, class, migration, exile, belonging, sexuality, and the body. In addition, many of Philip's works highlight the blending of Western European, African, and Amerindian cultures, traditions, and mythologies over four centuries of colonial contact in the New World. Forthright in her approach to the postcolonial experience, Philip offers insightful critiques on transatlantic slavery and the legacy of colonialism.
