Abstract
Abstract The concept of psychopathology varies across cultures. The prevailing perspective in the Western world involves deviations, alterations, or abnormalities in the cognitive, behavioral, and affective domains that are often accompanied by distress or functional impairment. However, behaviors that are considered pathological in one culture might be deemed acceptable in another culture. For instance, in Southeast Asia, some Hindus participate in the religious festival of Thaipusam, during which they fall into a trance and tolerate multiple bodily piercings. And within some North American Aboriginal societies, what is considered deviant behavior in a mainstream Western mindset might be interpreted as a special gift.
