Abstract
This entry defines Eurocentricity as the economic interest of the west and shows how, in the past two centuries, it emerged first as a theoretical construct in the classroom and then, at the hands of policymakers and empire builders, enriched the west at the expense of the rest. Although presented as scientific and objective, theories of perfect competition, free trade, growth and development, and most recently globalization are, in reality, pro‐rich and pro‐capital, favoring owners of capital heavily concentrated in the west.
