Abstract
Diabetes is a condition characterized by hyperglycemia. There are two main types of diabetes that are recognized in the Western World. Type 1 diabetes is an autioimmune disease with destruction of the insulin producing beta cells. This leads to rapid onset hyperglycemia requiring life long replacement of insulin. Type 2 diabetes is due to a combination of increasing insulin resistance and later a relative loss of insulin production leading to hyperglycemia. The onset of type 2 diabetes is gradual and is often considered to be part of a condition known as the metabolic syndrome, which includes insulin resistance, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and obesity. Many of these people have or eventually develop type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is important because of the complications associated with hyperglycemia and also because patients with diabetes have mortality rates that are more than double that of the non-diabetic population.
