Abstract
Denis Piramus, wrote hisVie seint Edmund le rei(Life of St. Edmund the king) c. 1190–93, when Bury St. Edmunds Abbey, under the leadership of abbot Samson, was one of the most wealthy and influential Benedictine houses in Europe. Denis uses Latin and English historical sources for the Life of Edmund (d. 869), patron saint of East Anglia, and expands the narrative with dramatic debates, and descriptive scenes of seafaring and battles in the epic style. HisVieis an effective and polished poem. Five editions were published between 1892 and 1935, all based on the single manuscript then known. The discovery of a second manuscript in 1975, with a more regular text containing some additional 900 lines at the end (and 42 marginal paintings), was followed in 2014 by a new critical edition. The very plausible identification of Denis Piramus as a certain monk Dionisius mentioned favorably in Latin documents from Bury is questioned by some critics.
