Abstract
Canadian writer Jack Hodgins evokes the local and the regional in his fiction; however, many of his characters are wanderers whose restlessness is curbed only by their return home to Vancouver Island, where most of his fiction is set, and their reconciliation with those left behind. Sometimes that return is fraught with apprehension, impeded by the distance generated by time, space, and conflict, but his protagonists often learn to connect with others again by revivifying collective memory and shared experiences. Hodgins thus attempts to strike a balance (and explore the tensions) between the cosmopolitan and the local. Although he specializes in conventional literary forms – the realist novel and short story – his characters are compelling, comic, and at times downright eccentric.
