It is a privilege, after many years, to thank publicly a few of the many people who have helped this book to come into being.This would be a much-diminished volume without the wisdom and verve of Allan Hepburn, who has been the most steadfast of supporters since the earliest days of this project.Debra Rae Cohen, Ned Schantz and Jonathan Sterne have provided astute feedback and professional support over the years, and in doing so have been models of good academic citizenship as well as scholarly practice.Miranda Hickman, Peter Kalliney and Eli MacLaren read an early version of this project with great care and critical attention, and helped me to see the possibilities therein.Similarly, Kate McLoughlin, Gill Plain and the external reviewers for Edinburgh University Press have made this a far better work than it would have been without their keen insights and editorial acumen.
