Abstract
“Vulnerability” refers to the potential to experience loss or harm. It is a term frequently used when studying the human impacts of climate change, natural hazards, and other environmental events or conditions. It is used in a relational sense, that is, the vulnerability of X to Y. Vulnerability is a function of the nature and degree of exposure to a potential source of harm, sensitivity to that harm, and the capacity to adapt. It is a condition that varies over space and time in concert with changes in human and ecological systems. Human population processes are important influences on the formation of vulnerability. A range of qualitative, quantitative, and geospatial techniques are used in its study.
