Abstract
Located on the edge of the city or suburbs, the metropolitan fringe blends industrial and/or agricultural lands with residential development or informal settlements. The uneven development of fringe areas makes it difficult to compare locations in order to develop theoretical frameworks because the role of industrial developers and real estate agents, municipal politics, the surrounding geography, and the type of industrialization all have varying degrees of influence.
