Abstract
Transgender prostitution is a global phenomenon, which over recent years has been receiving increased attention from sociologists, policy analysts, and epidemiologists. Their work brings forth that although transgender prostitutes have many similar experiences as nontransgender prostitutes, there are also some particularities. The majority of transgender prostitutes are on the female‐to‐male spectrum, and concentrated in metropolitan areas. They are known to experience high levels of violence, as well as a high prevalence of HIV. They are also active in community building and activism.
