Abstract We describe the maximum likelihood (ML) estimation and inference. Main theoretical results under the i.i.d. assumption are presented along with discussions. To demonstrate the ML inference, an example dealing with large medical claims and their determining characteristics is presented. We then turn to the ML estimation for stationary dynamic models (i.e. dependent data points) and introduce the quasi‐ML principle as a way of dealing with potential distributional misspecification. The US interest rate series is used to illustrate the quasi‐ML inference for dependent data.
