Abstract
John Wyclif (c. 1328/31–84) was a philosopher, theologian, and preacher, based primarily at the University of Oxford. His early writing was shaped by the customary modes of medieval academic disputation, but his challenging positions on politics, sacraments, and the ecclesiastical hierarchy made clear that his teachings had controversial extramural applications. Wyclif has come to be associated with the so‐called Wycliffite Bible, the first complete translation of scripture into English, though his explicit involvement with the project has not been demonstrated. He is also known for his influence on the Wycliffite movement in late medieval England, and for inspiring Bohemian reformists in Prague.
