Abstract
Legal contracts structure economic and social relations, including between workers and bosses, spouses, landlords and tenants, and producers or sellers and consumers of commodities. Contract features in work by economic and labour geographers, especially on the changing organisation and relations of production, and regimes of labour. There are some parallels, despite important epistemological and theoretical differences, in the radical, path-breaking work in black feminist geographies on the relationship between subjectivity, the production of space and the category of labour. Contract and its relationship to the state, to the process of the commodification of labour, to international law, colonialism, and to the spatial struggles against domination and subordination, play out in profoundly spatial ways—or in McKittrick's words, are revealed by “the ties and tensions between material and ideological dominations and oppositional spatial practices”.
